The Albufereta is the third largest wetland in Mallorca, after Albufera and Salobrar de Campos (also known as Salinas de Levante). A nature reserve was created in 2001 covering 211 hectares (including all the wetlands) and a buffer zone, with a total surface of 500 ha. Two thirds of Albufereta lie in Alcudia municipality and the rest in Pollença.
The reserve includes areas of salt marshes, reed beds, ponds, canals, natural watercourses, riparian forest, sand dunes and agricultural land, forming a mosaic of habitats.
Here we can see: Osprey, Marsh harrier, Eleonora’s falcon, Purple swamphen, Little grebe, Black-winged stilt, Kentish Plover, Purple, Grey and Night herons, Bittern and Little bittern (both very scarce), Cetti’s and Moustached warblers, Zitting cisticola, Kentish plover, Hoopoe, Stone curlew, etc. During migration and in winter Great egret and Greater flamingo can also be found.
The tour: as most of the land is private, we enter the reserve by different footpaths; there are several viewing platforms from where we can see most of the lakes and marshes. In spring we can also see several orchid species. The land is completely flat and the paths are very easy.
Duration: half day, although it can be extended to a full day tour, or combined to a visit to another nearby site.
Practical recommendations: in spring, autumn and winter bring your raincoat and waterproof walking/trekking shoes. At the end of spring and in summer a hat, sun protection and mosquito lotion are highly recommended. And of course, do not forget your binoculars, telescope and camera. Remember to bring enough water and your lunch.
